Sciacca hospital faces leadership and staffing shortages
The Giovanni Paolo II hospital in Sciacca is facing significant administrative and medical challenges. Local councilors Raimondo Brucculeri and Maurizio Blò have raised concerns regarding the Medicine Unit, which has lacked a formal head physician since 2019. Due to a convention with the University of Palermo, a competitive selection process for a new department head cannot be initiated. Currently, the department is managed on an interim basis by Dr. Ignazio Galizia, who also serves as the head of the Emergency Room, a situation critics say places undue pressure on both departments.
Nuccio Cusumano, president of the “Democrazia è Libertà” movement, has also called for the hospital to regain its status as a full hospital company (Azienda Ospedaliera). He noted that the territory currently relies on the ASP of Agrigento, which faces management delays and staffing shortages, including a lack of doctors and slow recruitment procedures. Advocates are calling on the Regional Government to intervene to ensure better healthcare services for the local population.
