Sciacca hospital isolates patient following meningitis diagnosis
A 74-year-old man from Sambuca di Sicilia has been hospitalized with meningitis at the Giovanni Paolo II Hospital in Sciacca. While his clinical condition is reported as not serious, the case has highlighted significant structural issues within the regional healthcare system.
Medical staff attempted to transfer the patient to a specialized infectious diseases department, but no beds were available across the region. Specifically, the infectious diseases unit at the Fratelli Parlapiano Hospital in Ribera is currently non-operational due to a chronic shortage of medical personnel. As a result, the patient remains in isolation within the general medicine department in Sciacca.
The Asp di Agrigento Hygiene Office has initiated emergency protocols, including epidemiological investigations and contact tracing. Preventive antibiotic prophylaxis will be administered to close contacts identified during the investigation to mitigate the risk of an outbreak.
