Orvieto landfill expansion sparks protests and political tension

The Committee against the expansion of the Orvieto landfill is organizing new protests following controversial social media statements by Thomas De Luca, the regional environmental assessor. The committee expressed concern that the assessor’s comments suggest the Umbria Region may not oppose the proposed 350,000 cubic meter expansion of the Le Crete facility, even though the official authorization process is still ongoing.

Protest organizers are calling for political responsibility from the regional government, urging them to make a definitive decision rather than deferring to technicalities. A popular petition against the expansion has already gathered approximately 1,500 signatures. The committee intends to mobilize local associations and citizens to block the project and advocate for a regional waste plan that avoids further landfill expansions.
