Science and care of graying hair
The biological process of graying hair is driven primarily by genetics and aging, which cause melanocytes to lose activity or decrease in number, leading to a reduction in melanin production. While genetics determine the timing of hair pigment loss, research published in Nature suggests that intense stress can accelerate this process by triggering a nervous system response that affects melanocyte stem cells within the hair follicles.
As hair loses pigment, it often becomes naturally more porous, dry, and coarse. Experts warn against common home remedies, such as using hydrogen peroxide to lighten or enhance gray hair. Hairdresser Gema Casas notes that hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent that can open the hair cuticle, potentially increasing dryness, porosity, and fragility. Instead, professional treatments are recommended to maintain the softness and shine of silver or white hair.
