Science explains why caffeine affects sleep differently for everyone

The varying impact of caffeine on sleep is determined by how individual organisms process the substance. While some people can consume caffeine late in the day without experiencing insomnia, others face significant sleep disruptions from even small amounts.

Caffeine does not provide actual energy; instead, it functions by blocking adenosine, a chemical that accumulates in the brain throughout the day to signal tiredness. By interfering with adenosine receptors, caffeine temporarily increases alertness and concentration.

Several factors influence how long caffeine remains active in the body, including genetics, metabolism, age, and consumption frequency. Genetic differences in liver enzymes can categorize individuals as ‘fast’ or ‘slow’ metabolizers. Other variables such as pregnancy, smoking, certain medications, and liver function can also alter caffeine metabolism and its subsequent effect on sleep quality.
