Scientific research explains why humans spontaneously use ‘pet-directed speech’ when communicating with animals. This phenomenon, similar to ‘baby talk’ used with infants, involves altering the tone, rhythm, and melody of the voice to be higher-pitched, more playful, and more expressive.

Studies indicate that this shift in communication is not merely a habit but a way to enhance connection and capture attention. Because communication with pets relies heavily on non-verbal cues like tone, movement, and gaze, the melodic quality of the voice conveys messages that words alone cannot.

A 2017 study specifically observed how dogs react to different speech patterns. The findings showed that puppies exhibited significantly higher interest in speech directed specifically at dogs compared to standard adult-directed speech, approaching the sound source more quickly and maintaining attention for longer periods. Adult dogs showed similar tendencies.
