Science of posture and leg strength for fall prevention

Maintaining an upright posture is a complex biological process that requires active muscle contraction rather than just passive structural rigidity. Research indicates that the body does not stand at a perfect 90-degree angle to minimize energy; instead, it leans slightly forward. This slight inclination allows sensory receptors in the calf muscles to remain in an ideal position to signal small changes in movement, enabling the spinal cord to manage muscle contractions via sensory-motor feedback to prevent falls.

To combat the gradual loss of muscle mass and function associated with aging, strength training for the lower limbs is a critical strategy for preserving autonomy and preventing falls. Strengthening the quadriceps, glutes, calves, and hip muscles improves the ability to correct imbalances and navigate obstacles. Recommended exercises include assisted squats, static lunges, lateral walking with resistance bands, seated knee extensions, step-ups, and leg raises. These movements help improve coordination and stability, which are essential for maintaining balance in older adults.
