Science subjects cause grading disadvantage for Norwegian students

A new report from researchers at the University of Oslo reveals that choosing science subjects in upper secondary school can result in a significant grading disadvantage. The study, commissioned by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, estimates that students specializing in science subjects could see their final grade point average drop by as much as 3.7 points compared to those choosing social sciences, languages, or economics.

This disparity is attributed to the higher difficulty level in obtaining top grades in science subjects. Consequently, many students are opting for subjects perceived as easier to secure better grades, which impacts the recruitment of talent into science and technology fields.

Research and Higher Education Minister Sigrun Aasland stated that while the government does not intend to make science subjects easier, it must ensure that choosing them is not perceived as a disadvantage. The government is looking into measures to increase recruitment in these critical sectors to meet Norway's need for technical competence.
