Researchers are making strides in understanding and combating metabolic disorders and obesity through different biological approaches.
In Japan, scientists at Osaka Metropolitan University have identified the OPA1 (optic atrophy-1) protein in hypothalamic neurons as a key regulator of appetite and metabolism. Studies on mice demonstrated that the absence of this protein leads to an increased craving for fatty foods and subsequent weight gain. The research also noted gender differences, with the impact of OPA1 deficiency being more pronounced in females, suggesting that future obesity treatments may require gender-specific pharmacology.
In Poland, researchers from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn are investigating the potential of functional foods to support metabolic health. Their study focuses on selenium-enriched beetroot, utilizing the vegetable's natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as a carrier for selenium. The goal is to determine if this combination can help mitigate issues related to obesity, hypertension, and blood sugar and lipid imbalances by protecting cells from oxidative stress.
