Scientific associations warn of Colombian science budget cuts

Scientific and university associations in Colombia have expressed concern regarding proposed budget reductions for the Ministry of Science (MinCiencias) for 2027. According to the government's budget project, the ministry's total budget is expected to decrease by 9.8% compared to 2026.

Specifically, the organizations noted a projected 10.89% reduction in the category dedicated to investment in science, technology, and innovation. The Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences, the Colombian Academy of Economic Sciences, the Association of Colombian Universities, and the Colombian Association for the Advancement of Science issued a joint statement calling for the strategic importance of these investments to be considered during budget debates to ensure the country's economic and social development.
