Scientific discoveries reveal quantum symmetry breaking and Earth rotation fluctuations

Researchers have observed a new state of matter involving the material YbSb2 (ytterbium antimonide). When cooled to approximately 0.95 Kelvin, the material becomes a superconductor. During this transition, physicists observed the spontaneous emergence of a small magnetic field of about 0.44 gauss without the application of an external magnetic field. This phenomenon indicates a spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry, meaning the quantum state of the material distinguishes between different directions of time.

In a separate geophysical study, researchers from the University of Alberta have investigated why the length of a day is not constant. Findings published in Nature suggest that the Earth's rotation speed fluctuates by milliseconds due to interactions between the inner core and the mantle. As the liquid core accelerates or slows down over decades, the mantle reacts in the opposite direction to maintain the planet's angular momentum. These changes are driven by gravitational moments caused by the non-spherical shape of the core and electromagnetic interactions at the core-mantle boundary.
