Scientific research challenges the 'multiply by seven' rule for dog aging

Scientific research indicates that the common rule of multiplying a dog's age by seven to determine human equivalent years is inaccurate. Dogs undergo much more rapid development during their early years; for instance, a one-year-old dog may already be physically and sexually mature, comparable to a human adolescent or young adult.

Aging rates vary significantly based on a dog's size and breed. Small breeds generally have longer lifespans and age more slowly after their initial development, whereas large breeds tend to age more quickly and have shorter lives. Factors such as genetics, diet, exercise, and veterinary care also play critical roles in the aging process.

A more precise scientific method involves analyzing DNA methylation. Based on research published in Cell Systems, a logarithmic formula has been proposed to better estimate age: Approximate human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This approach accounts for the non-linear nature of canine aging.
