Scientific studies reveal organs can age at different rates
Recent scientific research has demonstrated that biological aging can occur at different rates across various organs and tissues within a single individual. A study published in Nature Medicine utilized artificial intelligence to analyze over 25,000 histopathological images from 983 people, part of the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project. By developing “tissue clocks,” researchers were able to estimate the biological age of 40 different tissue types, achieving an average error of approximately 4.9 years.
Complementary research into epigenetic clocks—mathematical models based on DNA methylation—aims to clarify the biological mechanisms behind these aging markers. While traditional epigenetic clocks have been used to predict biological age and link it to disease, scientists are working to understand exactly which biological processes, such as energy utilization, cell growth, or immune system activity, these clocks are reflecting.
These advancements suggest that a person's chronological age may not accurately represent the physiological state of all their organs. Future applications may include using blood samples to estimate aging patterns and better understanding the relationship between biological age, chronic diseases, and the effectiveness of anti-aging interventions.
