Scientific researchers conduct penguin studies in Argentina and Antarctica

Researchers are conducting specialized studies on penguin populations in Argentina and the Antarctic region. In Cabo Vírgenes, Santa Cruz, specialists from the Provincial Agrarian Council, the Por el Mar Foundation, the National University of Southern Patagonia, and the Wildlife Conservation Society will perform a census between October 16 and 18. This effort aims to evaluate the impact of a major wave that damaged nesting areas and to understand how ocean food availability affects the approximately 120,000 breeding pairs of Magellanic penguins.

Simultaneously, a scientific campaign led by the Argentine Antarctic Institute is tracking Emperor penguins at the Cerro Nevado island colony in the Weddell Sea. This mission, which includes participation from Aves Argentinas and the Global Penguin Society, utilizes satellite transmitters to monitor how adults travel to find food for their chicks. The study focuses on how sea ice conditions influence these movements, providing critical data for conservation efforts.
