Scientific review recommends strength training for cyclists

A scientific review published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports provides new guidance on incorporating strength training for cyclists. Researchers from institutions including the Universidad Europea de Madrid and the Universidad de Murcia suggest that one to two strength sessions per week are generally sufficient to improve performance.

The study emphasizes that training should be adapted to the athlete's existing resistance training volume to avoid excessive fatigue or muscle soreness that could interfere with cycling sessions. The researchers recommend working with loads between 60% and 85% of a one-repetition maximum to optimize benefits without adding unnecessary body mass or compromising recovery.
