Scientific studies examine emotional bonds between humans and animals

Scientific research is providing deeper insights into the psychological connections between humans and animals. Studies on canine behavior suggest that dogs exhibit behaviors often interpreted as jealousy. Research published in PLOS ONE by Christine Harris and Caroline Prouvost observed that dogs attempt to interpose themselves between their owners and a perceived social rival, such as another dog, through vocalization or physical movement. However, researchers note that while these behaviors are evident, it remains debated whether this constitutes true human-like jealousy or is a form of social resource competition.

Separately, a review of 20 studies published in Child & Family Social Work by researchers from Örebro and Umeå universities examines the impact of pets on children's mental health. The findings indicate that animals often serve as sources of emotional support, friendship, and stability. Children frequently view pets as confidants or even as 'therapists,' with strong emotional bonds being linked to reduced social anxiety and increased empathy. The research emphasizes that the quality of the relationship is a key factor in these psychosocial benefits.
