Scientific studies explain physical fatigue and aging mobility

Recent scientific studies have provided insights into the physiological reasons behind physical fatigue and changes in mobility.

Researchers from Nnamdi Azikiwe University investigated why climbing stairs causes sudden shortness of breath, even in fit individuals. The study found that stairs require immediate, intense effort without the gradual warm-up period typical of activities like cycling. This sudden demand engages fast-twitch muscle fibers in the legs, glutes, and torso, often outstripping the heart's ability to supply oxygen quickly enough, leading to rapid breathlessness.

Separately, scientists from Flinders University and the University of Canberra examined how walking patterns change with age. By analyzing data from 107 adults, researchers discovered that the nervous system begins to prioritize stability over efficiency as people age. Older adults tend to engage opposing muscles around the ankle simultaneously to stiffen the joint and improve balance. While this increases safety, it results in a less efficient forward movement, shorter strides, and faster fatigue.
