Scientific studies link bacteria to psychopathy and pollution to Alzheimer's
Researchers from the University of Porto, the University of Oxford, and other institutions have identified associations between specific bacteria in the gut and mouth and psychopathic traits in the general population. The study, published in Translational Psychiatry, examined 200 Portuguese participants, evaluating traits such as impulsivity, lack of empathy, and antisocial behavior alongside biological samples. Findings suggest that certain microorganisms may be linked to processes involving emotions and social behavior.
In a separate neurological study, scientists at Scripps Research have uncovered a chemical mechanism through which air pollution and wildfire smoke may contribute to memory loss and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, identifies a process called S-nitrosylation. This chemical alteration, triggered by toxins from pollution, pesticides, and smoke, disrupts brain cell function and prevents the formation of new connections, potentially leading to cell death. Researchers noted that blocking this process in models showed promise in reversing memory loss signals.
