Scientific studies propose human evolution and mammoth hunting revisions

New scientific research is challenging traditional understandings of human evolution and prehistoric hunting patterns.

A study published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology by Dr. Ian Towle of Monash University proposes expanding the Homo genus to include ancestors from the Australopithecus and Paranthropus genera. The research argues that the boundaries between direct human ancestors and fossil relatives have blurred, as recent discoveries show complex behaviors and tool use in species previously excluded from the Homo genus. This expansion aims to more accurately reflect the non-linear and complex nature of the human genealogical tree.

In a separate study published in Current Biology, an international team of researchers analyzed the ancient DNA of 521 woolly mammoths from Eurasia and North America. The genetic analysis revealed that Ice Age hunter-gatherers may have preferentially hunted female mammoths. While natural sites contained a majority of males (66%), remains found at archaeological sites associated with human activity were 70% female. This suggests that Upper Paleolithic hunters specifically targeted females, whereas males were more likely to die in natural traps.
