Scientific studies reveal complexities in biological aging and dietary impact
Recent scientific findings highlight the complexity of measuring biological aging and the impact of lifestyle on long-term health. A study involving over 100,000 adults suggests that dietary patterns significantly influence how the body ages, particularly regarding brain and arterial health.
Researchers suggest a plant-heavy approach, often referred to as a ‘Green Mediterranean Diet,’ to promote longevity. Key components include legumes, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, and green tea, while reducing intake of sugary drinks, processed meats, and high-sodium products.
Separately, research published in the journal npj Aging has challenged the uniformity of biological age measurements. By analyzing blood samples from 3,227 participants in the U.S.-based Health and Retirement Study, scientists discovered that five of the most commonly used epigenetic clocks do not measure the same biological phenomena. While these clocks use DNA methylation to estimate age, they provide different insights into the body's internal processes, meaning a single ‘biological age’ result may lack consistency across different testing models.
