Scientific studies reveal new dietary pathways to combat inflammation

Recent scientific studies have identified new ways in which dietary components and gut microbiota can modulate inflammation.

Research from Northwestern Medicine, published in Nature Communications, suggests that butyrate—a short-chain fatty acid produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fibers—can ‘train’ intestinal cells. In mouse experiments, this process created a biological memory that maintained anti-inflammatory protection even after the substance was no longer present. The study found that butyrate promotes lasting changes in intestinal lining cells, increasing the production of the anti-inflammatory molecule IL-10 and reducing the severity of colitis-like conditions.

Separately, researchers at the University of Aveiro have investigated the potential of purple passion fruit peel as a nutritional aid for asthma. The study, published in Food Research International, found that the fiber-rich byproduct can enhance antioxidant defenses and modulate airway inflammation. In tests, supplementation led to a reduction in immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels associated with allergic responses, as well as a decrease in inflammatory cells within lung tissue.
