Scientific studies reveal new insights into tick populations and Lyme disease control
Recent scientific studies have provided new insights into the ecological drivers of Lyme disease and potential natural methods for tick control.
Researchers from the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies conducted a 35-year study in a New York forest ecosystem. Their findings challenge the long-held assumption that white-tailed deer are the primary drivers of tick population increases. While deer were previously thought to support larger tick numbers, the long-term data showed no statistical correlation between deer density and the concentration of tick nymphs, which are the stage most likely to transmit Lyme disease to humans. Instead, white-footed mice were identified as a much more significant factor in the tick life cycle.
In a separate study published in ‘Scientific Reports’, researchers from Dalhousie University in Canada discovered that balsam fir needles and their essential oils can effectively eliminate ticks. Led by Professor Shelley Adamo, the three-year study demonstrated that the essential oil acts rapidly, killing nearly 100 percent of overwintering ticks within a few days under low temperatures. This discovery offers a potential natural avenue for reducing tick populations and curbing the spread of Lyme disease.
