Scientific theory suggests North America and Europe may be one continent
A controversial scientific theory proposes that North America and Europe may actually be part of the same continent, which would reduce the total number of continents on Earth from seven to six.
Dr. Jordan Phethean of the University of Derby suggests that the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates may not have fully separated, contrary to the traditional belief that the split occurred approximately 52 million years ago. The theory is supported by two scientific studies indicating that an underwater ridge stretching from Greenland through Iceland to the Faroe Islands may contain remnants of original continental crust.
Researchers utilized gravitational and seismic measurements to analyze the ocean floor, discovering sections where the crust is significantly thicker than normal. These findings suggest that the landmasses remain connected by thinner continental material, potentially forming a ‘North Atlantic bridge’ that links the two regions despite the presence of the Atlantic Ocean.
