Scientifiques en rébellion calls for water moratorium at Village de l’Eau

The group Scientifiques en rébellion participated in the Village de l’Eau event held in Melle, Deux-Sèvres, from July 16 to July 21, 2024. The gathering focused on defending biodiversity and addressing the impacts of the agro-industrial complex, specifically regarding the export-oriented corn industry and water appropriation in the context of climate change.

Participants called for a moratorium on mega-basin projects and advocated for a deep reform of the agricultural and food systems, citing recommendations from reports by ANSES, INRAE, and the Haut Conseil pour le Climat. Despite reports of heavy police presence, including road blockades, identity checks, and drone surveillance, the event attracted approximately 40,000 visitors.
