Bengaluru officials deny notice was served to scientist C. N. R. Rao
The Election Commission of India (ECI) and Bengaluru election officials have issued clarifications regarding the status of Bharat Ratna recipient Professor C. N. R. Rao during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka.
Initial media reports suggested that the 92-year-old scientist had been served a notice to establish his identity due to a ‘self-name mismatch’ caused by a spelling discrepancy—specifically an extra ‘f’ in the title ‘Proff’ compared to the older ‘Prof’ record. However, the District Election Officer (DEO) of Bengaluru Urban, Maheshwar Rao, dismissed these reports as ‘factually incorrect,’ stating that no formal notice was served to Rao or his family.
Officials clarified that during the SIR process, a discrepancy was noted between his 2002 entry (recorded as ‘Rama’) and his current registration. Instead of issuing a notice, the Booth Level Officer (BLO) directly recommended his inclusion in the final electoral roll, citing his stature and contributions to the nation. Enumeration forms were instead delivered respectfully to his residence by officials to complete the necessary documentation.
