Scientists call for ethical debate on Mars colonization
A group of planetary scientists and ethicists, led by Lonneke Roelofs from Utrecht University, is calling for an urgent ethical debate regarding the colonization of Mars. The warning comes in response to increasing plans by private companies to establish permanent settlements and pursue terraforming.
In a contribution to the journal ‘EOS’, the researchers warn that a rush toward colonization driven by human and capitalist interests could lead to the irreversible destruction of the planet’s scientific archive. Specifically, they note that transforming Mars to be more Earth-like could destroy vital evidence of the planet’s history and the potential for extraterrestrial life before it can be fully studied.
