Scientists challenge effectiveness of collagen supplements for skin aging

A new study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology suggests that collagen supplements may not significantly assist in slowing skin aging, despite widespread promotion by companies and influencers.

Biostatistician David Robert Grimes and dermatologist Anjali Mahto reviewed meta-analyses from 2021 and 2023, identifying significant methodological flaws. The researchers found that previous analyses had incorrectly labeled non-significant results as statistically significant. After correcting these data errors, the authors found no statistically significant link between collagen dosage and improvements in skin hydration or elasticity.

The authors concluded that while hydrolyzed collagen peptides are designed to be easily digested, there is a lack of human research confirming they can effectively reach the dermis to provide anti-aging benefits. They described the current marketing of these supplements as ‘premature and scientifically unfounded,’ noting that the existing clinical evidence remains ‘methodologically weak, inconsistent, and prone to bias.’
