Scientists develop new methods to recycle plastic into reusable polymers and food proteins
Researchers are developing innovative methods to repurpose plastic waste through advanced chemical and biological processes.
At the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, scientists have created a new type of polymer called poly(1,2-dithiolane). This material is capable of vaporizing when heated and reforming into a solid state upon cooling without losing quality. This process allows the material to bypass the liquid phase, effectively separating it from impurities, dyes, and additives without the need for harsh chemicals. This technology offers a potential for an infinite recycling cycle.
In the United States, researchers at Southern Illinois University (SIU) have developed a technology to transform PET plastic and agricultural waste into nutritional ingredients. By using genetically programmed yeast, the team can convert decomposed plastic molecules and biomass into proteins, vitamins, fats, and flavor molecules. This project, presented at the American Chemical Society congress, aims to create sustainable food sources for extreme environments, such as disaster zones or future space missions to Mars.
