Scientists Identify Eight Acoustic Building Blocks Underlying All Birdsong

A multinational research team analyzed about 116,000 recordings from more than 3,000 songbird species, uncovering that all birdsong is constructed from eight basic acoustic motifs – three types of trills, three types of whistles, chaotic notes and harmonic stacks. The researchers employed a global citizen‑science database and machine‑learning techniques to compare songs across continents, revealing how environmental factors shape the mix of motifs each species uses.

Lead author Quentin Bacquelé, a PhD candidate at the University of Saint‑Étienne, explained, “The diversity is huge. If you go to Asia, Africa or the Amazon, you will hear totally different songs,” yet the underlying simplicity is consistent. The findings, published in *Science*, provide a new framework for studying the evolution and communication of passerine birds and may help assess the impact of human‑generated noise on avian acoustic landscapes.
