Scientists Identify Lipid Droplets and Gut B Cells as New Defenses Against Viruses and Multiple Sclerosis

Researchers at the University of La Trobe and collaborating Australian institutes discovered that lipid droplets – previously considered passive fat stores – act as dynamic antiviral hubs in brain astrocytes. Using dual‑omics approaches, they showed that viral infection reshapes droplet composition, adding specific fatty acids and signalling the immune system to release key antiviral proteins.

A separate international team led by the University Hospital of Bonn, with partners in Basel, Toronto and Yale, found that B‑cell‑depleting therapies for multiple sclerosis trigger beneficial B cells to move from the intestine into the bloodstream and central nervous system. This gut‑derived B‑cell migration appears to improve disease outcomes, revealing a previously unknown mechanism behind the therapy’s success.
