Scientists investigate biodiversity loss in Czech meadow ecosystems

Researchers from the Technical University of Liberec, Masaryk University, and the University of Vienna are investigating the causes of declining biodiversity in meadow ecosystems. Studies indicate that soil calcium availability and the composition of soil bacteria and fungi are critical factors in maintaining species richness. Scientists have noted that both extreme agricultural intensification and the complete abandonment of meadow management negatively impact biodiversity.

In the Pálava region of the Czech Republic, extreme drought and rising temperatures are significantly altering the landscape. Temperatures in the area are reportedly two degrees higher than fifty years ago. Long-term botanical monitoring shows that even drought-resistant species, such as Festuca wallichiana, are struggling to survive recent heatwaves. These climatic shifts are causing traditional grasslands to be replaced by opportunistic species typically found in disturbed areas, a process that can take years to reverse.
