Scientists Klenerman and Balasubramanian address University of Oviedo students

Scientists David Klenerman and Shankar Balasubramanian, recipients of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research, met with over 300 students at the University of Oviedo. Alongside Pascal Mayer, they were recognized for developing next-generation DNA sequencing technologies.

During the session, which included representatives from the Health Research Institute of the Principality of Asturias (ISPA), the researchers emphasized the importance of curiosity-driven research. They shared how their professional collaboration began at the University of Cambridge when Balasubramanian’s interest in DNA structure met Klenerman’s expertise in laser technology. They encouraged students to pursue scientific inquiry without the immediate need for practical applications and to remain resilient despite experimental failures.
