Scientists measure record-breaking 247 zeptosecond interval
Researchers have achieved a new record in time measurement by recording an interval of 247 zeptoseconds, which is equivalent to 0.000000000000000000247 seconds. The study was conducted by a team from Goethe University Frankfurt, DESY, and the Fritz Haber Institute.
The experiment utilized X-rays from the PETRA III synchrotron in Hamburg to study the hydrogen molecule (H2). By observing how light travels across the molecule, scientists identified a tiny delay between the moment light reaches one atom and the next. This measurement demonstrates that electronic responses to radiation are not instantaneous.
To capture these ultra-fast movements, the team used a COLTRIMS reaction microscope to record the trajectories and movements of particles produced when photons impact the molecule and expel electrons. This breakthrough allows for a deeper understanding of ultra-fast phenomena occurring at atomic and molecular scales.
