Scientists Pinpoint Failure Mechanisms in Solid-State Batteries
Two independent research teams have identified the physical causes of solid‑state battery failures. One study published in *Nature* by scientists at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials found that lithium deposits generate high internal pressure during charging, cracking the solid electrolyte. A separate study in *Nature Nanotechnology* by researchers from MIT, the Technical University of Munich and collaborators showed that tiny electrical imbalances create conditions for lithium structures to grow and pierce the separator, causing short circuits.
These findings resolve a long‑standing mystery that has delayed commercial deployment of solid‑state batteries. Automakers such as Toyota, Honda, Mercedes‑Benz and BMW, which have invested billions in the technology, are now targeting EV roll‑outs in the second half of this decade.
The breakthrough could accelerate commercialization, offering longer ranges, faster charging, higher safety and greater energy density compared with conventional lithium‑ion batteries.
