Scientists test nuclear warhead effectiveness against asteroids
Researchers led by astrophysicist Isaiah Santistevan of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have conducted simulations to test the effectiveness of using nuclear warheads to deflect city-killer asteroids.
Using a 1-megaton nuclear device against a simulated 160-meter asteroid, the study published in The Planetary Science Journal suggests that disruption is highly likely in two out of three tested scenarios. The research indicates that such a method could serve as a viable planetary defense option, though the mechanism of action may differ from traditional expectations of surface detonation.
These simulations are intended to inform the viability of nuclear mitigation strategies and support emergency response planning for potential asteroid impacts.
