Scientists warn of climate policy failures and irreversible environmental risks

Scientists are warning that current climate strategies are insufficient to prevent irreversible damage to the Earth's systems. Peter Wadhamsha, former director of the Scott Polar Research Institute, suggests that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels has likely already been lost.

Wadhamsha advocates for a new approach based on risk assessment. He argues that political and technological responses are moving too slowly compared to the accelerating dynamics of the Earth system. He proposes a method to scientifically compare the risks of mitigation and adaptation efforts against the risks of unmitigated warming.

Nobel laureate Giorgio Parisi has criticized political institutions for a lack of long-term vision, describing a tendency for leaders to ignore long-term environmental crises in favor of immediate issues. Parisi notes that while younger generations are not resigned to the crisis, the political cycle often fails to address problems that require decades of sustained effort. He also highlighted a growing gap between the scientific community and the public, suggesting that scientists must improve their communication to overcome perceptions of being an out-of-touch elite.
