Scope Rating upgrades Spain's sovereign debt rating to A+

Scope Rating has upgraded Spain's sovereign debt rating from A to A+ with a stable outlook. This improvement brings Spain's creditworthiness closer to that of France, which holds an AA- rating.

The upgrade is attributed to sustained economic performance, strong domestic demand, and improving fiscal indicators. Notably, the yield required on Spanish debt has recently fallen below that of French debt, a rare occurrence.

In 2025, Spain recorded its first primary surplus in 18 years. Public debt ended 2025 at 100.7% of GDP, exceeding previous projections slightly, but the government forecasts the ratio will drop to 99.3% in 2026. The country continues to lead growth among major Eurozone economies, supported by rising employment and productivity.
