ScopeLift CEO says regulatory excuse for value-free tokens is fading
ScopeLift CEO Ben DiFrancesco argues that the regulatory justification for governance tokens that provide no value to holders is diminishing. For years, many decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) projects designed tokens without links to revenue or cash flow to avoid scrutiny from regulators like the SEC.
DiFrancesco suggests this shift will lead to increased scrutiny for protocols that generate fees but lack a plan to distribute value to their tokens. He frames token value as a critical component of economic security; if a token's market value is lower than the assets it governs, the protocol becomes vulnerable to hostile takeovers.
He noted that protocols with fee-generating capabilities should have a credible, programmatic way to return value, such as through buybacks or distributions. He cited Uniswap as an example of a major project utilizing such mechanisms.
