Sentina Nature Reserve coastal protection project approved

The municipal council has approved the feasibility documents required to begin the construction of submerged breakwaters to protect the coastline adjacent to the Sentina Nature Reserve. The project aims to combat coastal erosion along a 1.8 km stretch of shoreline, spanning from the mouth of the Tronto river to the northern boundary of the reserve.

Financed with €6.5 million from the European Regional Development Fund (FESR Marche 2021-27), approximately €4.7 million is specifically allocated for the works. The plan involves building 14 submerged breakwaters, each 90 meters long, constructed from natural rocks. These structures will sit roughly half a meter below sea level to minimize visual impact and allow surface currents to maintain water exchange.

The project is expected to benefit marine flora and fauna by providing habitats while breaking wave energy before it reaches the shore. Construction is anticipated to begin by autumn and is expected to last approximately one year. The works will be managed through an integrated tender process, covering both executive design and execution.
