Scorpion accidents show varying trends in Brazil
Health authorities in Brazil are reporting varying trends in scorpion accidents across different regions. In Ribeirão Preto, the Municipal Health Secretariat recorded 1,170 accidents between January and July 2026, marking a 13.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Experts highlight the yellow scorpion (Tityus serrulatus) as a primary concern due to its ability to adapt to urban environments.
Conversely, the state of Goiás has seen a decrease in incidents. Between January and July 2026, Goiás recorded 5,094 scorpion accidents, a significant drop from the 10,258 cases reported during the same period in 2025. In the capital, Goiânia, cases also fell from 431 to 372.
Health officials attribute the presence of these animals to urban factors such as sewage networks, which provide shelter and food, particularly cockroaches. Prevention advice includes sealing cracks, protecting drains, managing waste to reduce cockroach populations, and checking clothing and footwear before use.
