Scotland allocates £1.34 million for nature and wildfire recovery

The Scottish Government has announced more than £1.34 million in funding to support nature restoration projects across Scotland. A significant portion of this package is dedicated to repairing damage caused by summer wildfires in the Cairngorms, specifically following the Abernethy wildfire.

The Cairngorms National Park Authority will receive £150,100 to restore damaged habitats, support wildlife recovery, and investigate methods to reduce the risk of future fires. Specific tasks include replacing damaged wildlife monitoring cameras and restoring parts of the Duack Burn that were impacted by emergency firebreaks.

Broader funding will support various environmental initiatives, including native oyster restoration, chough habitat improvements on Islay, and restoration work within four National Nature Reserves. The package also covers river restoration to improve habitats and floodwater storage, deer management, and the control of invasive non-native species. This investment is part of the Scottish Government’s £23 million nature restoration budget for 2026-27.
