Scotland approves 500MW battery storage project in Aberdeenshire
Scottish Ministers have approved plans for the Abbotshaugh Energy Storage project in Aberdeenshire. Developed by Island Green Power, the 500MW/2,000MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) is designed to store surplus electricity and release it during periods of high demand to support grid resilience.
The facility will be located approximately 5km west of New Deer and will connect to the SSEN Transmission Greens 400kV substation via underground cables. The project will occupy roughly nine hectares of land currently used for agriculture and includes battery storage units, an electrical substation, fire suppression systems, and biodiversity measures. The developer has scheduled the grid connection for 2033.
