Scotland hospitality sector faces decline as consumers cut back on dining

New research from The Knowledge Bank, the insight hub for Scotland Food & Drink, reveals that 58% of people in Scotland are cutting back on meals and drinks at hospitality venues. The data shows that only 39% of Scots eat out at least once every two weeks, while fewer than a third (29%) go out for drinks on a fortnightly basis.

Financial pressures are cited as a primary driver for this shift. Approximately 79% of respondents identified the cost of living as a major concern, and 72% highlighted high food prices. The number of individuals describing themselves as ‘only just managing financially or going without essentials’ increased from 13% to 17% between March and June 2026.

Beyond economics, changing consumer habits are evident. One in 10 Scots are dining out more frequently during the day, attracted by lunch deals and daytime promotions. Other factors influencing these shifts include health concerns, safety, transport issues, and changing work patterns.
