Scotland officials call for national wildfire response unit

Scottish officials and fire services are calling for enhanced wildfire prevention and a dedicated national response unit following a significant increase in blazes across the country. Recent data from the Scottish Government indicates a 330% rise in recorded moorland and woodland fires, with 238 incidents reported last year compared to 55 in the previous period.

Following a massive wildfire in the Cairngorms National Park that burned approximately 10 square miles of moorland and forestry, Scotland’s chief fire officer, Stuart Stevens, issued an open letter emphasizing that emergency response alone is insufficient. Stevens described wildfires as “dynamic, unpredictable and dangerous,” arguing that the nation must shift focus toward prevention and preparedness to protect lives, infrastructure, and the environment.

Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay also advocated for a national wildfire response unit after meeting with land managers and gamekeepers involved in the Cairngorms response. The large-scale blaze required more than 500 firefighters and led to the evacuation of homes and campsites. In response to the economic impact, the Scottish Government has established a £3 million recovery fund for businesses affected by the Cairngorms fire.
