Scotland suffers 2-1 Nations League defeat to Slovenia
Scotland suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Slovenia at Hampden Park in a Nations League fixture, marking their second consecutive home loss under new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli. Although Ryan Christie gave Scotland an early lead in the 31st minute, Slovenia responded with goals from Aljosa Matko and Danijel Sturm to secure the victory.
The defeat has placed Scotland in third place in Group B1, leaving them three points behind Slovenia and eight points behind group leaders Switzerland. Analysts noted that Pocognoli’s three-at-the-back system left significant defensive spaces on the flanks and between the lines, which Slovenia exploited. Additionally, the Scottish midfield was frequently bypassed and overrun.
Following the match, captain Andy Robertson expressed frustration with the team’s performance, stating that the players appeared mentally and physically tired. While acknowledging the transition to a new managerial regime, Robertson emphasized that the responsibility for the lackluster display rested with the players on the pitch. Scotland faces upcoming fixtures against Switzerland and North Macedonia in November.
