Scotland to expand GP-led walk-in services to 40 centres

First Minister John Swinney has announced plans to expand GP-led walk-in services across Scotland, aiming to bring the total number of planned or operational centres to 40. The expansion will benefit 24 additional areas, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, and West Lothian, with many services expected to open within a year.

The initiative is part of a pilot programme designed to provide patients with same-day access to care from GPs, advanced nurse practitioners, and other clinicians. The program, which has been extended until April 2029, seeks to offer more flexible appointment times and relieve pressure on broader NHS services.

During the official opening of the 11th service in Buckhaven, Fife, Swinney noted that the pilot has seen more than 10,500 cases in its first six months. The services are intended to provide care closer to home without the requirement for pre-booked appointments.
