Scotland's Historic Buildings Set for Major Redevelopment

Glasgow City Council has submitted plans to demolish 1990s additions to the People's Palace and Winter Gardens as part of a £35.9 million refurbishment aimed at making the A‑listed museum more accessible, inclusive and sustainable. The proposal includes removing the existing kitchen, toilets, retail area and staff accommodation, rebuilding stair and lift towers, and adding new visitor facilities and learning spaces.

In Greenock, developer Bridgend Property Limited and Nicholson McShane Architects have lodged plans with Inverclyde Council to restore the vacant A‑listed Mariners’ Home and convert it into flats while adding new residential buildings on the surrounding grounds. The scheme seeks to preserve key architectural features, improve public access to the historic site, and provide high‑quality housing for the community.

Both projects are subject to public consultation and aim to preserve Scotland’s heritage while adapting the buildings for contemporary use.
