Scotland's Hospital at Home programme expands to treat infants and children

A new report by Healthcare Improvement Scotland shows that the national Hospital at Home programme, previously limited to adults, has begun treating babies and children. Between November 2025 and April 2026, 340 infants and children received neonatal and paediatric care at home in Lanarkshire, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and Tayside, with NHS Forth Valley planning to launch its own service later in the year.

Families such as the McGrady family from Airdrie have benefited; their three‑month‑old son Jude avoided a week‑long hospital stay for a kidney infection by receiving IV antibiotics at home, allowing his parents to remain at home with their older daughter. The programme provides daily visits from specialist staff, reducing disruption and supporting family life.

The expansion reflects a broader shift in Scottish health policy toward delivering more care in familiar home settings, aiming to lessen hospital pressure and improve patient experience.
