Scotland's retail footfall rises 1.7% in June amid World Cup boost

Retail footfall in Scotland increased by 1.7% year‑on‑year in June, following a 0.4% rise in May, while footfall across the rest of the UK fell 3.4% YoY. The growth was strongest in Glasgow, which recorded a 6.1% increase, whereas Edinburgh showed no change.

The Scottish Retail Consortium attributed the uplift to Scotland’s participation in the FIFA World Cup, with higher spending on food, drink and merchandise ahead of the team’s first two matches. Retailers also cited the gradual reopening of pedestrian areas after the March Union Corner fire in Glasgow and expect further gains from the upcoming Commonwealth Games (23 July‑2 August). Industry observers noted the potential impact of a promised high‑street “renaissance” from incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
