ScotRail Class 385 fleet surpasses 62 million miles

ScotRail’s Class 385 electric train fleet has surpassed 62 million miles in passenger service since its introduction in 2018. The 70-train fleet, manufactured by Hitachi Rail, has carried an estimated 25.5 million passengers on key routes, including connections between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Glasgow’s south side, and North Berwick.

The transition from diesel Class 170 units to these electric models has resulted in an estimated 82 per cent reduction in carbon emissions. The fleet is maintained at the Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh through a partnership between ScotRail and Hitachi Rail.

ScotRail Engineering Director Barbara McIntyre noted that the mileage is equivalent to traveling to the Moon and back more than 130 times. The fleet has also received industry recognition, winning two Golden Spanner awards in the last three years for reliability and performance.
